Penguins Terrorize Fundies...Again

Apparently, penguins...especially the gay ones, lol...are just too scary to be allowed on the shelves of school and public libraries. To avoid confusion, let me back up just a bit and give you some background. In 2005, a children's book entitled, And Tango Makes Three was released. It tells the true story of two male penguins in New York's Central Park Zoo who were a couple. The zoo staff even provided an egg for the two to hatch after watching them try to "hatch" an egg-shaped rock. The point of the book was to teach children that not all families are the same and that families with same-sex parents can be as warm and loving as any other family.

Sounds harmless (and downright cute!), right? Alas, wherever fundies dwell...stupidity will inevitably follow. Since the book's publication, it has been challenged in a variety of arenas and was listed as the American Library Association's most challenged book in 2006. Here is an overview of the controversy surrounding these little guys...

*November 17, 2006 - Shiloh, IL - Parents insist that the school district administration restrict access to the book.

*December 20, 2006 - Charlotte, NC - Charlotte schools superintendent orders the book's removal from all school shelves.

*May 5, 2007 - Lodi, CA - Parents claim the book's presence on the public library shelves is detrimental to their children...or was it just offensive to the adults? Hmmmm.

These are just a few examples, but the story is the same...one, small minded group attempts to force their personal moral standards and objectives on the rest of us. Funny, isn't that what the fundies constantly accuse gay rights groups of doing?
